The lower end of the range applies when a 7kW unit is installed on an existing DB board with spare capacity and a short cable run to the garage. The upper end applies when a 22kW three-phase unit is installed with a new dedicated circuit, board upgrade and a longer cable run to an outdoor parking bay.
Every current-generation electric vehicle sold in South Africa uses the Type 2 connector, which is the standard on Zappi, Zaptec and Wallbox units. That means one wall-mounted charger works across every make and model in a typical household fleet.

A dumb charger is a wall unit that draws its rated current whenever the vehicle is plugged in and asks for it. On a typical Sandton home with a 60A supply, that is a real problem. If the pool pump, geyser and oven are all running and the car starts charging at 32A on top, the main breaker trips. The result is repeated inconvenience and, in the worst case, damage to sensitive electronics on unclean shutdowns.
A load-managed charger like the Zappi or Zaptec continuously monitors the incoming supply through a current transformer clamp on the main feed. When household demand is high, the charger throttles down or pauses charging. When demand drops, it ramps back up. This means the charger works inside the available headroom of your existing supply rather than exceeding it, which is critical on 60A single-phase properties.
The second reason to specify a load-managed unit is solar. If you have PV on the roof and an inverter that publishes generation data, a Zappi or Zaptec can be set to charge the car only from surplus solar. On a sunny Highveld afternoon, the car pulls exactly the power the panels are exporting to the grid, so nothing is wasted and no grid electricity is used. Off-peak scheduling is the third benefit: you can set the charger to only run during City Power off-peak hours, which lowers your effective cost per kilowatt-hour.
Dumb chargers are cheaper up front, sometimes by R4,000 to R6,000, but they cannot do any of this. On a 60A supply with a pool, geyser and family cooking load, a dumb unit will trip the main breaker regularly. On a supply that is already close to capacity, load management is not a nice-to-have but a technical requirement.

Half a day is typical for a straightforward install where the DB board has spare capacity and the cable run is under 15 metres. A full day is more likely if a DB upgrade is needed or the charger is mounted in an outdoor parking bay. The COC is issued on the same visit once testing is complete.
Yes. A 22kW charger requires a three-phase supply. Most Sandton properties have three-phase, but some older single-storey homes are single-phase only. If you have single-phase, a 7kW unit is the correct specification. We check the supply configuration before quoting.
Yes, if you have a load-managed charger like the Zappi or Zaptec. These units monitor your solar export and divert surplus PV energy into the car. On a good Highveld day, that can mean 20 to 40 kilometres of range added purely from the panels, with no grid electricity used.
We quote a DB board upgrade as a separate line item, typically R3,000 to R8,000. This might involve adding a sub-board, reconfiguring the existing board, or in older homes replacing it altogether. All work complies with SANS 10142 and is signed off with the COC.
Our installation workmanship carries a 24-month warranty. The charger itself is covered by the manufacturer, typically 3 years for Zappi and Zaptec and 2 years for Wallbox. The COC is a permanent record of compliance on the date of issue.
